A new study by US News & World Report ranked Fort Myers, Florida the “8th Safest Place to Live in the United States” in 2021.
The ranking is determined using crime statistics – the number of crimes committed per 100,000 people – from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reports. In the survey, US News also provides comparisons of #8 Safest City Fort Myers to similar metro areas across the country, including Fresno, CA and Honolulu, HI.
In 2020, Fort Myers reported 129.1 violent crimes and 524.3 property crimes (per 100,000 people), both far lower than average, whereas similar cities and metro areas reported numbers as much as six times higher when compared to Fort Myers.
According to Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Offense Data from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the total number of crimes reported in Fort Myers went down nearly 12% from 2019 to 2020, and is down nearly 28% total from 2018 to 2020.
Among being one of the Safest Cities to live in the United States, in 2021 Fort Myers has also ranked the #2 Best Place to Retire and #3 Fastest Growing City in the U.S., as well as #7 Best Place to Live in Florida. US News also ranks the River District in Downtown Fort Myers as the #1 Attraction in the area.
